Faculty members within the Clinical Pathology Branch continue to provide excellent clinical service to the patients of the OSU Health System, maintain a strong teaching commitment to the medical students and residents, and have demonstrated increasing academic productivity. The clinical laboratories at The OSU Medical Center, The James Cancer Hospital, University Hospitals East and Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza are under the direction of Dr. Amy Gewirtz. Dr. Carl Speicher directs the Stoneridge laboratory. During the 2007-2008 academic year, the laboratory continued to enjoy increased growth in both our routine and subspecialty areas. The total laboratory automation system celebrated its ninth year anniversary. As we head into our tenth year we look forward to further expansion of the automation line. The laboratory continues to focus on implementation of new technology and auto-verification to provide high quality and timely results. The University Reference Laboratories, Inc. (URL) is also under the direction of Dr. Gewirtz and provides clinical laboratory services for outpatients of the OSUMC Health System and outreach clients. URL is a joint venture between the hospital and the pathology department which ensures local availability of routine and esoteric laboratory testing. With the trend towards outpatient medicine, URL ambulatory testing has continued to increase. Our web-based, electronic order-entry and resulting system has has been critical to maintaining and increasing URL’s client base. The clinical laboratories are fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists, the American Association of Blood Banks, the FDA, and the Ohio Department of Health.
