Community pathology is an integral part of our department’s overall academic mission. The vision is a branch of generalists with the desire to take the banner of OSU to the community in an attempt to foster “post-translational research” – the dissemination of knowledge discovered in the academic medical center to the greater community. This branch began in 1980 when the department began providing full-scope pathology services to the Memorial Hospital of Union County. University Hospital East was added in 1999 and Southeastern Regional Medical Center in 2001. In January 2003, this branch began providing part-time support to Knox Community Hospital and as of January 1, 2010 now provides full-scope pathology services including medical directorship of the laboratory. The branch began providing laboratory medical directorship and reference lab services (including anatomic pathology specimens) to the Medical Center of Newark in late 2007. In March 2010 the branch began providing part-time pathology coverage to Doctor’s West Hospital. The members of our branch also help provide service coverage at the University Hospital main campus for frozen sections, anatomic pathology GI service and the Transfusion Medicine service. Additional informal associations have been established at Fairfield Medical Center, Licking Memorial Hospital, Marion General Hospital, Mary Rutan Hospital, Mt. Carmel East, Buckeye Dermatology, The Ohio Department of Health Laboratory as well as the American Red Cross. JoAnna Williams, MD was appointed as Vice Chair, Academic Community Pathology Branch on July 1, 2008. A Community Pathology elective rotation was established in 2008 for senior OSU Pathology Residents. The rotation includes time at University Hospital East and Memorial Hospital of Union County.
