Questions
about our lab operations? Please read on to find the answers
quickly!
Welcome to the Pathology Core Facility. Our lab has been designed
to help you to accomplish your goals! Think of us as an
extension of your lab. Please refer to the services
and price listing pages in this website to know more
about our services and fee structure. New services will
be designed and offered as needed. Please feel free to
let us know what services you would like to see offered
in the future. Below are answers to some of the most frequently
asked questions to assist you in familiarizing yourself
with the facility. Thank you for demonstrating interest
in the facility and we look forward to working with you.
How do I get work scheduled?
We are open to receive your requests Monday through Friday
6:00AM to 5:00PM. Please call us at (614) 688-3495. Voice
mail is available to leave us a message if we are unavailable
or you can email us at mary.marin@osumc.edu.
If you have an urgent need to reach someone, please feel
free to call Mary Marin at (614) 293-3938 and she will
be happy to assist you.
How should I label my specimens? How will the finished slides
be stored?
Please label your specimens briefly with the information
you want to appear on the slides/blocks. If you are labeling
the blocks directly only use a No.2 pencil. Permanent
markers erase from the cassettes during processing. We
can discuss how to prepare your specimens for processing.
Please remember to bring a slide box for us to store your
slides when they are completed.
How do I pay for the service?
When you bring your specimens to be processed, bring a
100W Form complete with the account number to be billed.
We will complete the 100W Form and give you a copy when
you pick up your order.
What if I feel like I have special histology needs?
That is one of the reasons our facility was implemented
- to meet the special needs of the research community.
No one understands your needs like you. When you bring
your specimens to our lab we will go over in detail how
you would like to see your specimens processed, embedded
and cut. It is very important to us that you give us feedback
on how you felt your specimens turned out so that we can
make any needed adjustments.

What kind of turn around time can
I expect?
We generally can return small projects to you within a
week or two. In August there is an unusually heavy workload
and things may take longer. We pride ourselves on giving
you a realistic timetable. If we feel that we will not
be able to meet your schedule demands, we will tell you
up front. We will keep you informed in the event anything
changes after your job has been accepted and give you
options. In general, work is done on a first come, first
serve basis.
How can I help the facility to expand?
We will be applying for grants in order to retain additional
staff and offer new services. Publications resulting from
your work can be helpful to us in securing additional
funding. Please keep us up to date concerning publications
that are associated with your use of the facility. You
may also consider us when writing your grants. By securing
additional funding, we hope to expand our facility to
offer other valuable services such as automated immunohistochemistry
and in situ hybridization techniques. We greatly
appreciate your help in this way.
Where
is the Pathology Core Facility located?
The PCF labs are located at the Polaris Innovation Centre at 2001
Polaris Parkway. We also have a drop off and pick up location
on main campus for your convenience at 354 Doan Hall, 310
West 10th Avenue. Office Phone: (614) 366-3181.
What are the advantages to using the core facility?
The Pathology Core Facility is under the direction of Dr.
Weiqiang Zhao M.D., Ph.D., a pathologist with clinical and
research experience. He and his colleagues are available
to offer professional advice with your histology needs.
We are able to offer a reduced fee for our service to those
who collaborate or assign release time to the pathologists
in the department. We feel interdisciplinary relationships
benefit the university and encourage them. We will be happy
to refer you to the pathologist who specializes in your
area of interest.
